Libraries and Mobile Technology
by Ana Ignacio
In today’s digital age, most individuals are mobile device users. As we increasingly use these devices for everyday activities, access to mobile technology becomes more important than ever. Libraries play a crucial role in bridging the digital divide by providing access to mobile devices and internet connectivity for those who may not have them at home. Most mobile devices come with assistive technology (AT) such as text-to-speech, dictation technology, and visual supports that make reading easier.
Libraries support mobile technology use in several important ways: power, wi-fi access, and comfortable spaces. Many libraries offer power outlets, charging stations, and even portable battery chargers for patrons. Reliable Wi-Fi is also freely available, allowing visitors to stay connected. Libraries provide comfortable seating, good lighting, and quiet areas for extended use of mobile devices, supporting both productivity and leisure.
Libraries actively promote their mobile-friendly services. A great example is QR codes to quickly direct users to resources like the online catalog, event information, or e-book platforms. Lee King highlighted creative ways libraries engage with the community through mobile technology and social media. For instance, libraries can create interactive and "Instagrammable" spaces, such as selfie stations with themed backdrops and hashtags, to encourage visitors to take photos and share their library experiences online. Mobile devices also support access to library services outside the physical library. Libraries often offer streaming services, academic databases, audiobooks, and other digital resources, accessible through mobile apps or web platforms.
Additionally, librarians remain accessible online. Through the library’s website, users can submit questions and receive support, resource recommendations, and research guidance directly from library staff.
Whether inside or outside the library, librarians support the community by assisting with the use of digital technology devices. The library is a welcoming and trusted resource, offering guidance in person and online.
