Libraries Bridging the Digital Gap by Ana Ignacio
Digital literacy means more than just owning a mobile device or computer. It involves knowing how to use these tools effectively and confidently. For those who lack access to technology, or the skills to use it, these tasks can be overwhelming and frustrating.
Libraries play a critical role in bridging this digital divide. They provide patrons with access to computer labs and free Wi-Fi, allowing individuals to use their own devices or library equipment. But libraries go beyond simply offering technology—they also provide guidance and resources to help people navigate and understand how to use these tools.
As Kalana Gates, branch manager of the Detroit Public Library, explains: “DPL are more than just places to borrow books—they are centers for connection, learning, and empowerment” (Gates, 4 C.E.).
Libraries are inclusive spaces that support individuals from all backgrounds—whether youth, seniors, or those with specific needs—in becoming digitally self-sufficient. By offering assistive technologies and learning support, libraries empower communities to adapt, grow, and succeed in an increasingly digital world.
